UPPSC RO ARO vacancy 2026: post-wise

These numbers are from the vacancy tables in the official advertisement. The commission says posts of a similar nature can still be added before the prelims result, so the count may change.

Post Department Total UR SC ST OBC EWS
Samiksha Adhikari UP Secretariat 122 39 56 3 12 12

Total 501

Two things stand out. First, the ARO post in the UP Secretariat alone has 261 seats, more than half the total. Second, the RO Secretariat post has 56 SC seats out of 122, far more than its UR seats. If you’re an SC candidate of UP with a plain graduation degree, this is a rare cycle for you.

Women of UP get 24 of the 122 RO Secretariat seats and 52 of the 261 ARO Secretariat seats under horizontal reservation. Reservation, as always, is only for permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh. Others apply as General.

Eligibility for UPPSC RO ARO 2026

Educational qualification

All qualifications must be complete by 26 November 2026. If you’re still waiting for a final-year result, you can’t apply this time.

Post What you need
Samiksha Adhikari (RO) Bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognised university
Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (ARO): Secretariat, Board of Revenue, Advocate General Bachelor’s degree + O Level certificate (NIELIT/DOEACC) or equivalent + Hindi typing at 25 words per minute
Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (ARO): UPPSC Bachelor’s degree + Diploma in Computer Science or O Level + Hindi typing at 25 words per minute
RO and ARO (Account) B.Com with Accountancy + O Level in Computer Application + knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari
Care-Taker, Manager, Store Keeper Bachelor’s degree (preference for hotel management, accounts or stores experience)
Receptionist (Swagati) Bachelor’s degree with History, Geography, English Literature, Anthropology or Architecture as a subject + good Hindi

English typing is a plus for ARO posts, and a Territorial Army record of 2 years or an NCC ‘B’ certificate gives you preference when everything else is equal.

Age limit

You must be 21 to 40 years old on 1 July 2026. In dates: born not earlier than 2 July 1986 and not later than 1 July 2005.

Persons with disabilities 15 years (maximum 55)
Ex-army personnel and ECO/SSCO 3 years + period of army service
CM Fellowship research scholars 1 to 3 years, based on tenure

Your date of birth is taken only from your High School certificate. Make sure your OTR matches it exactly.

Application fee

Category Prelims fee
Unreserved, EWS, OBC ₹125 (₹100 + ₹25 processing)
SC, ST of UP ₹65
Ex-servicemen of UP ₹65
PwD of UP ₹25 (processing fee only)
Dependants of freedom fighters, women, skilled players Fee of your original category

If you clear the prelims, you pay again for the mains: ₹225 for UR/EWS/OBC and other-state candidates, ₹105 for SC/ST and ex-army, and ₹25 for PwD.

Selection process and exam pattern

Selection has two written stages. The final merit list is made only from your mains marks. The prelims is a screening test, and 15 times the number of vacancies are called to the mains.

Prelims (objective, OMR)

Detail Pattern
Paper One paper: General Studies + General Hindi
Questions 200 (140 General Studies + 60 General Hindi)
Marks 200 (1 mark each)
Time 3 hours
Negative marking 1/3 of the marks for each wrong answer

General Studies covers science, Indian history and the national movement, polity, economy, agriculture, geography, current events, reasoning, and a special section on Uttar Pradesh (education, culture, agriculture, industry, traditions). General Hindi has 10 questions each on opposites, sentence correction, one-word substitution, synonyms and similar topics.

Mains (descriptive)

Paper Subject Marks Time
Paper 1 General Studies I (history, society, geography, environment, science and tech) 200 3 hours
Paper 2 General Studies II (polity, governance, economy and agriculture, ethics, current affairs) 200 3 hours
Paper 3 General Hindi and drafting (letters, notes, précis, grammar, basic computer knowledge) 200 3 hours
Paper 4 Hindi essay (2 essays: 800 words and 1,200 words) 200 3 hours

Each GS paper has 20 questions: 10 short ones (8 marks, 75 words) and 10 long ones (12 marks, 125 words). That’s a UPSC-style mains in Hindi, so practise writing answers, not just MCQs.

You also need at least 40% in the prelims and mains (35% for SC/ST) to be placed on the merit list.

The typing rule: The advertisement doesn’t describe a separate typing test. But 25 wpm Hindi typing is an essential qualification for ARO, so expect the commission to check it before the final selection. If you can’t type in Hindi yet, start now. Two months of daily practice is usually enough to reach 25 wpm.

How to apply for UPPSC RO ARO 2026

  1. Get your OTR number first. Register at otr.pariksha.nic.in if you don’t have one. The commission asks you to do this at least 72 hours before you apply, so don’t leave it for the last week.
  2. Go to uppsc.up.nic.in → All Notifications/Advertisements → find A-4/E-1/2026 → click Apply.
  3. Log in with your OTR number and the OTP (or OTR password). Your personal details fill in automatically from the OTR.
  4. Fill in your essential qualification and choose Yes/No for each preferential qualification. For posts with specific qualifications (Account, ARO), select your options clearly.
  5. Pay the fee through SBI MOPS (net banking, card or other modes) by 26 November 2026. Print the payment slip.
  6. Submit, then print the final application. Keep it safe, because you’ll need it at the mains stage.

If your payment fails, go to Candidate Dashboard Login → Pending Payment and pay again before the last date.

You can change your qualification details only once, till 3 December 2026. Category, domicile, gender and date of birth come from the OTR, so fix those on the OTR portal and sync the dashboard before you submit.

Should you apply?

If you’re a graduate from UP and preparing for UPPSC PCS anyway, yes. The RO/ARO syllabus overlaps heavily with PCS: GS, Hindi and essay. UPPSC’s calendar puts the PCS prelims 2026 on 6 December, so one round of preparation covers both.

Honestly, though, plan for a long cycle. This exam isn’t in UPPSC’s 2026 exam calendar, so the prelims will likely be in 2027, and the last RO/ARO cycle (the 2023 advertisement) took more than two years because its first prelims was cancelled after a paper leak. Don’t quit a job or pause other exams for this one.

Skip ARO if you can’t reach 25 wpm in Hindi typing or don’t have an O Level certificate by 26 November. In that case, apply for RO only, which needs just a degree.

If you’re from another state, you can apply, but you’ll compete for UR seats only, and the Hindi paper and essay make this hard unless your Hindi writing is strong.

Also open in UP right now: UP TGT recruitment 2026 with 17,735 posts, if you have a B.Ed. Your next step: get your OTR done this week, then apply well before 26 November.
