Hindi, English, Science, Social Science and Maths together have about 12,600 of the 17,735 posts. If you’re from one of these subjects, your odds are much better than in the small subjects like Sewing or Music, where a handful of seats will draw thousands of forms.

Eligibility for UP TGT 2026

Educational qualification

For most subjects you need all three of these:

  1. Graduation with that subject, with at least 50% marks, or a post-graduation with at least 45% (from a recognised university).
  2. B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised course.
  3. TET pass at the upper primary level (class 6 to 8), conducted by the UP government or the Government of India (UPTET or CTET at this level).

A few subjects have their own rules:

  • Hindi: along with Hindi in graduation, you also need Sanskrit at Intermediate level (or Uttar Madhyama from the UP Sanskrit board).
  • English: graduation must be with English literature.
  • Science: graduation with Physics and Chemistry. Biology: with Zoology and Botany.
  • Social Science: graduation with any two of History, Geography, Political Science and Economics.
  • Physical Education: B.P.Ed or B.P.E. in place of B.Ed.
  • Music: Sangeet Visharad (Bhatkhande) or Sangeet Prabhakar (Prayag Sangeet Samiti) is accepted along with a degree, but these don’t get extra merit points.

You must hold the qualifications by the last date of the application. The notice also says your eligibility certificate must be valid up to 30 June 2027. If your B.Ed or TET result is still pending, check with the commission before you pay.

Age limit

The minimum age is 21 years on 1 July 2026. The notice doesn’t give a separate upper limit. It only says forms won’t be accepted from anyone above 62 (the retirement age) on 1 July 2026.

Who can apply

Any Indian citizen can apply. But SC, ST, OBC, EWS and freedom-fighter-dependent benefits are only for permanent residents of UP. Candidates from other states are counted as General, and women must use a caste certificate issued on their father’s side.

Application fee

Category Fee
General / OBC / EWS / others ₹1,000
SC / ST ₹500
Persons with disabilities ₹300

You can pay online by debit card, credit card or net banking. The fee is not refunded, even if your form is rejected.

UP TGT exam pattern 2026

Selection is made only on the written exam. There is no interview.

Part Questions Marks
General knowledge 30 90
Your subject 90 270
Total 120 360
  • Time: 2 hours.
  • Marking: +3 for a right answer, −1 for a wrong answer (or more than one bubble).
  • Language: Hindi and English (language subjects are in that language).
  • Mode: offline, OMR sheet, black ballpoint pen only. No whitener, no eraser.

Negative marking changes how you should attempt the paper. A wrong answer wipes out a third of a right one. So guess only when you can rule out two options.

If two candidates have the same marks, the one with a higher graduation percentage goes higher. If that’s equal too, the training (B.Ed) percentage decides, and then the older candidate.

The syllabus is on the UPESSC website. Download your subject’s syllabus before you start revising.

How to prepare in 8 weeks

You have about 8 weeks between the last date and the exam. That’s tight, but enough if you plan.

  • Weeks 1 to 4: your subject first. It carries 270 of the 360 marks. Finish the full syllabus once, using NCERT class 6 to 12 books as the base, then your graduation notes for the harder topics.
  • Weeks 5 and 6: GK. Focus on UP-specific facts (districts, rivers, schemes, culture), Indian polity, history and current affairs of the last 6 months.
  • Weeks 7 and 8: previous papers and timed mocks on an OMR sheet. Practise bubbling with a black ballpoint so you don’t lose time on the day.

How to apply for UP TGT 2026

  1. Go to upessc.up.gov.in and open the TGT application link. It takes you to the apply portal.
  2. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) first. You can’t apply without it.
  3. Log in and fill in the TGT form in English. Choose your subject carefully.
  4. Upload your photo and signature in JPG (10 KB to 100 KB each, signature on a white background), and certificates as PDF (20 KB to 200 KB).
  5. Pay the fee online and save the receipt.
  6. Submit and print three copies. You’ll need two copies at document verification.

Check your category, date of birth and gender before you submit. These can’t be changed later. And if you submit more than one form, only the last one is kept.

Should you apply?

If you have B.Ed and an upper primary TET in a main subject, yes. 17,735 posts is a big intake, and Level 7 pay in an aided school is a solid, permanent job.

Be realistic about two things. First, UP teacher recruitments often drag. The result for the 2022 TGT advertisement was put up only in October 2026. Court cases and paper-leak worries can push dates, so keep preparing for other exams in parallel. Second, the small subjects (Sewing, Music, Ranjan Kala) have very few seats, so competition per seat is brutal.

If you’re also open to other states, look at BPSC TRE 4.0, which has 33,320 teacher posts in Bihar. And if you’re taking UP’s PET for Group C jobs, our UPSSSC PET admit card guide has the exam-day details.

Next step: finish your OTR this week, even if you plan to pay later. Portals slow down badly in the last 3 days before 23 November.
