GATE 2027 correction window (14 to 21 October)
The correction window is only for people who have already applied and paid. You can’t submit a new application in it.
According to the GATE 2027 information brochure, 21 October 2026 is the last date to:
- Change your category
- Change your test paper
- Change your exam city choices
- Add a second paper (only an allowed two-paper pair)
- Change your personal details
The brochure says an additional fee may apply for each change. The exact amount shows on the portal when you make the change. Adding a paper will cost at least the fee for that extra paper.
How to do it:
- Log in at gate2027.iitm.ac.in with the same DigiLocker account you applied with.
- Check your application status first. If it says “defective”, read the message. It tells you what to fix (often a blurry photo, a wrong signature, or a missing certificate).
- Make your changes, pay any extra fee, and save.
- Download the updated application and keep a copy.
Separate from this window, IIT Madras is checking every application. If they find a defect, they’ll tell you by email, SMS or WhatsApp and give you a deadline to fix it. Log in every few days until your status says “Application accepted”.
Don’t wait till 21 October. The portal gets slow on the last day, just like it did during registration.
GATE 2027 application fee
The fee depends on your category, how many papers you pick, and whether you apply in the regular or extended window.
| Category | 1 paper (regular) | 2 papers (regular) | 1 paper (late) | 2 papers (late) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹1,500 | ₹2,500 |
| All others (incl. foreign nationals) | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹4,500 |
So the late fee is a flat ₹500 more. The fee is non-refundable. IIT Madras only refunds duplicate payments, and only if you send proof.
One more warning from the official notices: accounts that haven’t paid are deleted after the portal closes. If your status says “Application submitted”, that means you haven’t paid yet. You’re registered only when it says payment was received.
Who can apply for GATE 2027
There’s no age limit. What matters is your degree and which year you’re in.
| Your degree | Eligible if |
|---|---|
| B.E. / B.Tech / B.Pharm | In 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| B.Arch (5 years) / B.Planning | In 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| B.Sc / B.A. / B.Com / BCA (3 years) | In 3rd year, or completed |
| B.Sc (Research) / B.S. (4 years) | In 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| M.Sc / M.A. / MCA | In 1st year or higher, or completed |
| MBBS / BDS / BAMS / BHMS etc. | In 5th semester or higher, or completed |
| Integrated M.Tech / Dual degree (5 years) | In 3rd year or higher, or completed |
Certificates from professional bodies like the Institution of Engineers (IE) or IETE also count, but only if MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC treats them as equal to a B.E. or B.Tech.
Writing two papers? You can, but only in fixed pairs. For example, a CS candidate can add DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA or ST as a second paper. An ME candidate can add AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE. Check the full list on the official two-paper page before you choose.
How to apply for GATE 2027 (step by step)
DigiLocker is compulsory for all Indian nationals this year. Most problems people are facing come from DigiLocker, so get that sorted first.
- Check your DigiLocker account. A “verified” account means you’ve completed e-KYC on DigiLocker. Just creating an account doesn’t make it verified. Look for the blue tick next to your name.
- SC/ST and PwD candidates: upload your certificates to a DigiLocker folder named exactly
GATE2027(no space). SC/ST candidates upload only the category certificate asCATEGORY.pdf. Each file must be between 10 KB and 600 KB. General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates don’t need to upload anything there. - Go to gate2027.iitm.ac.in and click Apply Now. Sign in with your DigiLocker account.
- Fill in your details, choose your paper (or two papers) and your exam cities.
- Upload your photo and signature. Photo: colour, white background, face covering 60–70% of the frame, JPG, 5 KB to 600 KB. Signature: black or blue ink, JPG, 3 KB to 300 KB. Signing in all capital letters or using only initials is not accepted.
- Pay the fee online and check that your status changes to “payment received”.
A few mistakes to avoid:
- Don’t delete your DigiLocker account after applying. IIT Madras will send all future communication through the account you used.
- If your details don’t match between DigiLocker and the portal, finish e-KYC in DigiLocker first, then try again.
- If you apply with an unverified account, your original documents will be checked at the exam hall. Carry them.

GATE 2027 exam pattern
You get 3 hours for 65 questions worth 100 marks. Every paper has 10 General Aptitude questions (15 marks), plus 55 questions from your subject.
- Question types: MCQ (one correct answer), MSQ (one or more correct answers) and NAT (you type a number).
- Negative marking: only for wrong MCQs. You lose 1/3 mark for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark for a 2-mark question.
- No negative marking for MSQ or NAT. There’s also no partial credit for MSQ.
- In most engineering papers (CE, CS, EC, EE, ME and others), 13 marks come from Engineering Mathematics.
The syllabus has been revised for GATE 2027, so download the new version from the official site even if you started preparing with last year’s syllabus.
Why GATE is worth the fee
GATE is more than an M.Tech entrance test. Here’s what a good score gets you, according to the official site.
M.Tech at IITs, NITs and other institutes. M.Tech students with a GATE score get financial help of ₹12,400 a month, usually for 22 months.
Direct PhD. A direct PhD after B.Tech or M.Sc with a valid GATE score pays ₹37,000 a month for the first two years and ₹42,000 a month from the third to the fifth year.
PSU jobs. Many public sector companies hire through GATE scores, including ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, POWERGRID, BHEL, GAIL, Coal India, SAIL, HAL, NPCIL and AAI. Each company releases its own notification after the result, with its own cut-offs.
And your score stays valid for 3 years, so one good attempt keeps doors open for a while.

Missed the GATE 2027 deadline?
Registration is closed, and IIT Madras doesn’t accept late or offline forms. Here’s what you can do instead:
- If you’re in 3rd year: you haven’t lost much. Start preparing now for GATE 2028. Registration usually opens around August or September. You’ll go in with a full year of prep instead of four months.
- If you’re in final year: put the time into placements. If you want a private job soon, our TCS NQT October 2026 guide covers the next test window.
- If you wanted a PSU job: PSUs that hire through GATE usually ask for a score from a specific recent GATE year, which they name in each notification. GATE 2028 is your next chance, so prepare for it properly.
Honestly, a rushed attempt in February with no prep wouldn’t have helped much. A year of steady prep usually beats it.
What to do after you apply
- Take a screenshot of the payment confirmation and keep it.
- Log in during 14 to 21 October to fix any mistakes in your form.
- Download the revised GATE 2027 syllabus and plan your prep backwards from early February.
- Watch for the exam city allotment on 4 January 2027.
We’ll update this page when the admit card, answer key and result come out. For help, the GATE 2027 helpdesk is helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in or 044-22578200. Apply only on the official site: gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
