Supreme Court JCA 2026 eligibility

Qualification

You need two things, both as on 1 September 2026:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in India. Any stream works: BA, BCom, BSc, BTech, BBA.
  • Knowledge of computer operation with a typing speed of 35 words per minute on a computer.

There’s no minimum percentage. Final-year students aren’t mentioned, and the cut-off date is 1 September 2026, so you should have your degree by then.

Age limit

You must be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old on 1 September 2026.

Category Upper age limit
General 30 years
OBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, PwD, ex-servicemen Relaxation as per Government of India rules
Dependents of freedom fighters Up to 5 years extra (up to 35)
Departmental candidates of the Supreme Court Registry No upper age limit
Employees of other govt departments, PSUs, banks No relaxation

The advertisement doesn’t list the exact relaxation years for each category. Under the usual central rules, OBC gets 3 years, SC/ST 5 years and PwD 10 years, but go by what the application form allows.

Vacancies and salary

The advertisement gives 250 tentative vacancies. It doesn’t give a category-wise split. Reservation follows Rule 4A of the Supreme Court Officers and Servants Rules, 1961. The Registry can also increase or reduce the number later.

JCA is in Level 6 of the Pay Matrix, with an initial basic pay of ₹35,400 a month. Allowances like DA, HRA and transport allowance are added on top, so the gross salary is clearly higher than the basic. The posting is in the Supreme Court in New Delhi.

Supreme Court JCA exam pattern 2026

There are 4 stages, and you must cross the minimum marks in each one.

Stage What it is Time Marks Minimum to qualify
1 Objective type test (100 MCQs) 1.5 hours 100 50
2 Typing test on computer, English, 35 wpm 10 minutes 50 25
3 Descriptive written test, English 2 hours 100 50
4 Interview – 25 13

Objective test: 100 questions

Section Questions
General English (including comprehension) 20
General Aptitude 15
General Knowledge 15
Constitution provisions on the Judiciary 15
Computer Knowledge 15
Supreme Court Rules, 2013 10
Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961 10

0.25 marks are cut for each wrong answer.

The 20 questions on the two sets of Supreme Court rules are where most candidates are weakest. The good news: the Supreme Court has put both rule books as PDFs on its recruitment page (notice dated 1 October 2026). Download them and read them properly. These 20 marks are the easiest to score if you prepare.

Typing and descriptive tests

  • Typing: 10 minutes, English, minimum 35 wpm. Mistakes up to 3% of the total words typed are allowed. A wrong word counts as a full mistake. A wrong capital or small letter, or a missing or wrong punctuation mark, counts as half a mistake.
  • Descriptive: 2 hours in English, with a comprehension passage, précis writing and an essay.

Both of these are held only in Delhi/NCR. The interview is either online or in Delhi.

How many get shortlisted?

If many candidates score 50+ in the objective test, the Registry will shortlist 10 candidates per vacancy (about 2,500 for 250 posts) for the typing and descriptive tests. Your descriptive paper is checked only if you pass the typing test. Then 3 per vacancy (about 750) go to the interview.

Exam centres for the objective test

The objective test is held in 131 cities across India. Some from the list:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Guntur, Kakinada, Kurnool, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram
  • Telangana: Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Warangal
  • Karnataka: Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru and more
  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, the North-East and others also have many centres.

You choose cities in order of preference while applying. The Registry can still move you to another city, and change requests aren’t accepted.

Application fee

Category Fee
General / Unreserved ₹1,500 + bank charges
SC / ST / OBC (non-creamy layer) / Ex-servicemen / PwD ₹750 + bank charges

The fee is paid online through UCO Bank’s payment gateway. It’s non-refundable, even if you don’t appear for the exam.

How to prepare in 6 weeks

  • Week 1 to 2: Read the two Supreme Court rule books and the Judiciary part of the Constitution (Articles 124 to 147 for the Supreme Court, plus the High Court articles). That’s 35 of the 100 questions.
  • Every day: 20 to 30 minutes of typing practice in English. 35 wpm with less than 3% errors sounds easy, but exam keyboards and nerves slow you down. Aim for 40+ at home.
  • English and GK: The same preparation as SSC CGL or CHSL works here. If you’re also preparing for SSC CHSL 2026, the overlap is big.
  • Computer knowledge: Basics of MS Office, internet, shortcuts, hardware and software terms.
  • After the objective test: Start précis and essay practice right away. The descriptive paper is in English and carries 100 marks.

Should you apply?

Honestly, yes, if you’re a graduate under 30 and can type. It’s a respected Level 6 central job, the fee is the main cost, and the syllabus is mostly what you’d study for SSC anyway.

Two downsides to know before you pay ₹1,500. The typing test, descriptive test and interview are in Delhi, and no travel allowance is paid. If you’re from the South or the North-East, plan for 2 trips. And the posting itself is in Delhi, so this isn’t a job near home.

Skip it if your English writing is weak and you can’t give it 6 weeks. The descriptive paper and the English-only typing test filter out a lot of people.

For any problem with the application, the Supreme Court Recruitment Cell’s email is recruitment.cell@sci.nic.in. Bookmark the official recruitment page and check it every week for the admit card and exam updates.
