CLAT 2027 eligibility
UG (5-year integrated LLB)
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with at least 45% marks, or 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- No upper age limit.
- Appearing in 2027? You can apply if your Class 12 exams are in March or April 2027. You’ll need to show your pass result at the time of admission, or you lose the seat.
- Indian nationals, NRIs, PIO and OCI card holders can write CLAT. Foreign nationals cannot. They apply to the NLUs directly.
Don’t have your caste or EWS certificate yet? The official FAQ says you can apply now and submit the certificate at admission. But if you can’t produce it then, you’re not considered under that category.
PG (LLM)
An LLB degree with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD), no age limit. Final-year LLB students writing their exams in 2027 can also apply. The PG paper is also 120 MCQs in 2 hours, mostly on Constitutional Law plus subjects like Jurisprudence, Contracts, Torts and Criminal Law.
The rest of this post focuses on the UG exam, which is what most students search for.
CLAT 2027 application fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General / OBC | ₹4,000 |
| SC / ST / BPL / PwD | ₹3,500 |
| Previous years’ question papers (optional) | ₹500 extra |
The fee is online only and non-refundable. Bank charges are extra. Honestly, ₹4,000 is steep for an entrance exam, so apply only if you’ll actually prepare for these 8 weeks.
How to fill the CLAT 2027 application form
- Go to consortiumofnlus.ac.in/clat-2027 and click Register.
- Register with your own mobile number and email. You’ll get an OTP on the mobile. Log in with the mobile number and the password you set.
- Fill your details. Spell your name and your parents’ names exactly as on your 10th/12th marksheets. The Consortium says a mismatch can cancel your admission later.
- Pick the programme (UG or PG) and your category carefully. Once you submit and pay, you can’t change the programme, category or BPL status.
- Choose your test centre city preferences.
- Upload, in PDF format only: a recent passport-size photo with a plain background, your signature, and your category, PwD or BPL certificate if it applies to you. Attestation isn’t needed.
- Pay the fee online and submit before 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM.
- Save or print the confirmation.
Fill only one form. If you submit more than one, only the last one counts, and you don’t get the earlier fee back.
Already applied? You can still use the “Edit Application Form” button to change things like your test centre city until 31 October. No updates are accepted after that.
Test centre change: Vellore and Tiruvarur removed
On 3 September 2026, the Consortium removed Vellore and Tiruvarur as CLAT 2027 test cities. If you chose either one, log in, open Edit Application Form → Test Centre Preference, pick another city and save it before 31 October.
New reservation categories at MNLU Mumbai (16 October)
A Consortium notification dated 16 October 2026 adds a Transgender category and an Orphan category at Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai, for both UG and PG. If either applies to you, update it by 31 October 2026:
- Log in and click Edit Application Form.
- Open the Reservations tab.
- Under MNLU Mumbai, answer “Are you a domicile of Maharashtra” and tick the category you want to claim.
- Click Save/Submit.
Check MNLU Mumbai’s updated brochure on the Participating Universities page first. If neither category applies to you, you don’t need to do anything.
CLAT 2027 exam pattern
The UG paper is 120 questions, 120 marks, in 2 hours. Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.
| Section | Questions (approx.) | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 22–26 | ~20% |
| Current Affairs, including GK | 28–32 | ~25% |
| Legal Reasoning | 28–32 | ~25% |
| Logical Reasoning | 22–26 | ~20% |
| Quantitative Techniques | 10–14 | ~10% |
The key thing to understand: almost every question comes from a passage of about 450 words. That means a lot of reading in 2 hours.
- Legal Reasoning needs no prior law knowledge. You apply the rule given in the passage to a fact situation.
- Current Affairs passages come from news and non-fiction writing on India, world events, arts and culture, and history.
- Quantitative Techniques is only 10th-standard maths: ratios, basic algebra, mensuration and statistics, asked from data in a passage.
If two candidates tie, the one with more marks in Legal Reasoning ranks higher. If they’re still tied, the older candidate ranks higher, then a computerised draw of lots.

NLUs that take admission through CLAT 2027
The Consortium lists 26 NLUs (GNLU’s Silvassa campus is listed separately):
NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal, WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, HNLU Raipur, GNLU Gandhinagar (and its Silvassa campus), RMLNLU Lucknow, RGNUL Punjab, CNLU Patna, NUALS Kochi, NLU Odisha, NUSRL Ranchi, NLUJA Assam, DSNLU Visakhapatnam, TNNLU Tiruchirappalli, MNLU Mumbai, MNLU Nagpur, MNLU Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, HPNLU Shimla, DNLU Jabalpur, DBRANLU Haryana, NLU Tripura (Agartala), RPNLUP Prayagraj, IIULER Goa and NLU Meghalaya.
For Telugu students: two NLUs are close to home, NALSAR Hyderabad and DSNLU Visakhapatnam. Seat numbers, fees and state reservation rules differ for each NLU, so check its brochure on the Participating Universities page before you fill preferences.
NLU Delhi is not on this list. It runs its own test, AILET, on 13 December. If you want NLU Delhi too, apply for that separately by 10 November. See our AILET 2027 guide for the fee, seats and pattern.
How to prepare in the 8 weeks left
You have about 8 weeks till 6 December. That’s enough to improve a lot if you’re regular, because CLAT tests reading and reasoning more than memory.
- Weeks 1–2: Read one long editorial every day and summarise it in 3 lines. Take one full mock test to see where you stand. Don’t worry about the score yet.
- Weeks 3–5: Two sectional tests a day, alternating Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning. For Current Affairs, revise news from the last 10–12 months, focusing on India, world events, important judgments and appointments.
- Weeks 6–8: Two or three full mocks a week, at 2 PM, exactly like the real exam. After each mock, spend more time checking your mistakes than you spent writing it.
About negative marking: a wrong answer costs 0.25 and a right one gives 1. So if you can rule out even one option out of four, an educated guess usually pays off. Don’t blindly fill every bubble, though.
Should you apply?
If you’re in Class 12 or a recent pass-out and even a little curious about law, yes. A top NLU gives you a 5-year LLB with strong placements and a clear path into law firms, judiciary exams, corporate jobs and policy work.
But be honest with yourself. Most serious CLAT students start preparing a year or more in advance, and the top NLUs fill up with them. Starting in October, you’re aiming for a good NLU, not necessarily NLSIU or NALSAR. That’s still a solid outcome.
My suggestion: apply this week, not on 31 October, and take a full mock this weekend. If you score below 40 even after 3 weeks of steady practice, keep CLAT but also have a backup plan. If you’re also preparing for engineering, see our JEE Main 2027 registration guide so the deadlines don’t clash.
