Jailer 2 vs Ranabaali Box Office: Rajini Leads Telugu States

Update (19 Oct, 8:30 AM): the first weekend. Jailer 2 is far ahead, including in the Telugu states. Sacnilk’s trade estimates:

Ranabaali didn’t get the Sunday jump a weekend usually brings. Jailer 2’s Telugu version alone beat it again.

Two big films, one day apart. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 opens on Thursday, 15 October 2026, and Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali follows on Friday, 16 October. Right now, Jailer 2 is far ahead in advance booking, even in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Ranabaali’s home ground.

Jailer 2 vs Ranabaali advance booking: the numbers

Here’s where both films stood on the evening of 14 October, going by Sacnilk’s tracker. Numbers in brackets leave out seats that theatres block in bulk, which is the fairer figure.

A few things stand out:

• Jailer 2 is outselling Ranabaali in the Telugu states. Its Telugu version alone has about ₹5.75 crore in Day 1 pre-sales. That’s almost 4 times Ranabaali’s entire Day 1 figure.
• Tamil Nadu is Jailer 2’s biggest market (₹13.18 crore for Day 1), followed by Karnataka (₹8.25 crore) and Kerala (₹6.90 crore). Mohanlal’s role is reported to be helping in Kerala.
• Ranabaali has 2 more days to sell. Telugu films often sell a big share of their tickets in the last 24 hours, so its number will grow. Still, a gap this wide won’t close before Friday.
• Overseas, Ranabaali is doing better. Trade reports put its North America premiere pre-sales past $100K, though trackers called the start slow.

I’ll update these with final pre-sales and the first-day collections as soon as the makers or trade trackers share them.

Jailer 2: what to expect

Rajinikanth returns as “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer from the 2023 hit. Nelson writes and directs again, and Anirudh’s music is back with a new “Jailer 2 Theme”. Sun Pictures has officially introduced Suraj Venjaramoodu (Dileep) and Vidya Balan (Kantha) as new characters.

The trailer came out on 5 October in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The Hindi version is called “Rajini The Jailer 2”. It’s a direct sequel, so watching the first Jailer (2023) before you go will help.

Ranabaali: what to expect

Ranabaali is a period action drama set during the famine of the 1870s in the Madras region. Vijay Deverakonda plays Ranabaali, a rebel from Singanamala, a village in Rayalaseema, who takes on the British. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, and South African actor Arnold Vosloo (from The Mummy) plays the colonial officer Sir Theodore Hector.

Rahul Sankrityan, who made Shyam Singha Roy, directs. The music is by Ajay-Atul, the Marathi composer duo behind Sairat. That’s an unusual pick for a Telugu film. The first single, “Endhayya Saami”, came out in all 5 languages.

The official trailer, released on 8 October, runs 3 minutes 47 seconds. That’s long for a trailer, but it sets up the world clearly without giving the story away.

Why this clash matters in the Telugu states

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, both films are fighting for the same screens during the Dussehra holiday week. Chiranjeevi’s Vishwambhara was also meant to release on 16 October, but it has been taken off that date on ticketing apps, so this is now a two-film fight there.

Usually a big local star gets the most screens in his own state. This time, Jailer 2 got a one-day head start and is booking far stronger in Hyderabad and Andhra. For Vijay Deverakonda, Ranabaali needs strong word of mouth from Friday’s first shows to catch up.

Tamil Nadu is a different story. Ranabaali has just 51 tracked shows there for Day 1, so it’s almost all Jailer 2.

Ticket booking tips for this weekend

• Book only on official apps or at the theatre counter. Big releases bring a wave of “FDFS tickets available” posts on WhatsApp and Instagram. Many of them take UPI money and vanish.
• Check the language before paying. Theatres in Hyderabad and Bengaluru run Tamil and Telugu shows of Jailer 2 at different times.
• Ranabaali in Hindi, Kannada or Malayalam? The makers announced these versions, but as of 14 October evening only Telugu and Tamil shows are listed in India. Don’t book until your language shows up in the app.
• Plan for a 3-hour slot. Both films are close to 2 hours 50 minutes long before the interval and ads.
• Skip pirated prints. Recording a film in a theatre or sharing pirated copies is a crime, and “download” sites are full of malware.

• OTT platforms for both films after their theatre runs

My take: which one to book first

If you’re a Rajini fan, you’ve probably booked Jailer 2 already, and the pre-sales say most of South India agrees. It’s the safer bet for a fun family outing, as long as the kids are 16 or older (that’s the U/A 16+ rule).

Ranabaali is the bigger gamble but could be the more interesting film. A period story about a famine and British rule, with Ajay-Atul’s music, is a real change from Vijay Deverakonda’s recent films. My suggestion: watch Jailer 2 on the opening weekend, and wait for Friday’s first reviews of Ranabaali before booking. If the word is good, a Monday or Tuesday show will be easy to get and cheaper.
